My name is Jude. I was born in Cap Haitian. I didn’t know my father, and my mother
died when I was 4 years old. My mother had arranged for her sister to take care of me
after her death so I moved to the countryside. After sometime I moved to Port au
Prince and lived at the Nazon Church.
I was 8 years old when Lydie Noel approached me. Because my mother had died and I
did not know my father, she asked me if I wanted to go to school. Her husband was Dr.
Claude Noel. He was the pastor of the Nazon Church. I told her I would like to go to
school if it was possible. Lydie said she would pay for me to go to school until she
could find a sponsor through the Bethany Project. This is the school sponsorship
program. I was sponsored from elementary through high school. I wrote letters to my sponsor and received letters from the sponsor too. My sponsor traveled to Haiti during one of the work team trips and visited me.
When I finished High School I decided I would like to become a doctor. The University
of Notre Dame in Port au Prince had a medical program. However there were about
1000 applicants for every 100 available seats. By the grace of God and the education I
received because of the Bethany Project, I was selected for one of the seats. I finished
my education with the University of Notre Dame and received my MD.
After university, the Lord presented me with another opportunity with the University of
Maryland. They sent teachers to Haiti to teach a compressed program on the specialty
of Infectious Diseases. I completed this course and became an Infectious Disease
Specialist.
My education qualified me for a position at the US Embassy in Haiti. I was responsible
for health screenings for people applying for a Green Card to work in the US.
The violence in Haiti closed the US Embassy for all but essential personnel. I became
concerned for my family’s safety and applied for the Humanitarian Parole. I am now
living in New Hampshire. I work at a medical clinic as a medical assistant.
First, I thank God for the path he has laid out for my life. And secondly, I thank God for Bethany Project and the education I received.
